What is Open Adoption?

Buckner practices open adoption, which means that the birth family and the adoptive family maintain contact after placement, establishing a significant, ongoing relationship.

A lifelong relationship with birth parents gives children of adoption knowledge of their genetics, heritage and assurance of their significance and worth.

If you choose to be part of an open adoption, here are some of the things you can expect:

• To select an adoptive family from a group of agency-approved profiles

• To have the option of speaking with or meeting the family in person

• To have continued contact with the family during your pregnancy, allowing you to truly get to know the family prior to the birth of the baby

• To have continued contact with your baby and the family after placement (such as visits, phone calls, letters and pictures)

If you choose to make a plan of adoption, you and the family you select will decide the amount of contact that is right for your relationship.
